When to Stop?

Part of the quandary with long term scrap projects is figuring out when you are finished.  I prepped another stack of orange peel blocks for applique last week.  After getting caught in New York having sewn up all my prepped blocks, I wanted to make sure that the next trip has plenty of hand work ready to go.  I think this stack should keep me busy for a while.  I'll keep going on these until the end of the year.  Most of the fabrics are hand dyes and batiks leftover from my Sawtooth Sampler and New York Beauty quilts, so these blocks need to keep going at least until those two projects are done.  If you want to check out hand work, be sure to visit Kathy's Quilts for Slow Stitching Sunday.
Then I spent some time organizing my OMG Churn Dash blocks.  These little guys start with 1 inch strips that have been getting sewn in bits and pieces for several years now.  I need to get out some graph paper and colored pencils to figure out how many of each color I will need.  The plan is to have diagonal stripes of colors in rainbow order, but I'm not sure how many blocks or how big the quilt should be.  I guess I'd better decide that so that I can figure out how many of what to get ready to go.  It will still be a long term project, but it can't go on indefinitely.  Can it?

I bet you will miss these long term projects, but knowing you there will be something new to take it's place. Hope we will see some quilt tops soon!

I hear you on the churn dash blocks for the OMGosh quilt. I'm afraid I'll have FAR too many, but I don't feel ready to draw up a plan yet. That may come back to haunt me

Good question - probably when you get sick of making the block =) Knowing the size you want to end at helps too... although if you make too many they can always be a pillow or wall hanging to go with it! I need to get off the computer or I will start a new project - little worry baskets! Must finish something first! Have a great week Angela - must put away blue and pull out the red.

That is the hard part for me... deciding when the quilt is done.
Usually it sits around languishing until it gets put on my UFO list and hopefully gets done.
I would like to be more proactive about making those decisions!

I'm reading your posts backwards - those Churn Dash blocks are really, really tiny! No project goes on forever, though when you are enjoying the making it can be hard to stop a quilt growing bigger and bigger and bigger...

What is the colour for July - looks like it is either peach or pale pink - can't tell from the background of your post
