 Most of yesterday was a big nap and some cold medicine, but I did finish up this red crumb place-mat in the evening.  It is made from 6 crumb blocks that were squared up to 6.5 inches.  I usually add sashing strips to crumb blocks because the seams can get bulky along the edges.  I was regretting that decision as I tried to get everything to lie flat, but it ended up working out, even if some

I cleared some slowly ongoing projects off the the design wall to make room for my midgets.  Every so often it is fun to pull them all out and admire the progress so far.  It looks like I have finished about 69 blocks up to this point.  I think the original quilt has 187 blocks in it, so there is still a long way to go.  Each block finishes at about 4 inches and the patterns are available at

These are made from one inch strips.  With the seam allowances on either side, that leaves only half an inch of fabric in the middle square.  I'm not sure what I'll do with these, but for now I'll set them aside with the plan of adding some more colors as the months go on.  I worked a tiny bit on Flamingo Bay this week, but didn't have much time in the evenings.  I have quite a bit of school work

This is Midget Block 65 which is called Pride of the Prairie. It was simple to make, though I didn't follow the directions exactly.  I went ahead and cut squares in half, but then glue sticked the freezer paper prepared pieces in place temporarily.   Then I took them to the machine to sew the parts back together again. My first Midget Block of the new year!  This one is called Maple Leaf it is #54.  It has 65 pieces and was traditionally pieced (using really small pieces).  It seems like it should be a red block.  In green it looks more like four leaf clovers to me.   By the time I was done, my 2 inch leader and ender blocks seemed HUGE by comparison. Mom called yesterday and asked if I could make a couple of quick tablecloths for Thanksgiving.   Anna helped my draw two big circles using the good old string on a pencil method.  I wasn't sure how to hem  round tapestry fabric so instead I made a bias fold binding. I was in a mood for piecing today, so even though the Rainbow ScrapHappy Squares are still sitting on the frame, I went ahead and finished off the flimsy for Rainbow Crumb Parade.  I sewed enough brown and black squares together last night to serve as the first and last row before deciding against making another row of white blocks.  The proportions seem better this way so I think I'll let it be.

Miss Sheila asked me to quilt another small throw for her. I am her "go to girl" for quilting projects these days. She made a disappearing nine patch top to go with a blue fleece blanket for the backing. She intends to turn the edges over for a self binding edge. All that remains of Spinning Stars is the binding.  I've got the fabric pulled already so I might get that ready to go this afternoon.  I fought with the quilting on this one from start to finish. The plan was to add a yellow border at 3.5 inches because it was the same size as the basic block unit in this quilt, then to add a wider green border to make it all fit onto the bed.  Unfortunately, there wasn't enough of the green, leading to another 3.5 inch border instead.  So now I still need to do something to make it just a wee bit bigger.  It will fit on the bed and even hang over the

I finished up my rainbow of crumb blocks this weekend! Most of them have been made along the way during the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Now I just have to decide how to put them together.    Option 1 is a simple grid.  Option 2 is an alternating grid.  I would fill in with half blocks along the edges, making the quilt a bit wider.  That might inspire me to add a row of brown blocks to the bottom

Company is coming. So instead of sewing,  I spent time turning my quilt studio.... Into a guest bedroom again.   I haven't picked the sewing machine up yet, so I can still sew a little bit, if it isn't too messy.  I guess crumb blocks aren't a good idea?

Somehow I managed to skip Midget Block number 48 last time I was working on these.   Mountain Road went together easily enough, it was paper pieced of course in four sections with a total of 20 pieces.

 My design wall looks like the result of short attention span quilter.  After seeing a rainbow string/crumb quilt,  I was inspired to pull out some of the rainbow blocks that have been accumulating this year.  I'll need to get everything tidied up this week for company next weekend, but I think I might have a string piecing marathon very soon.  Strings go nicely with crumbs of course and they

I was so happy to have finished off RRCB that I felt inspired to start a new quilt. This is Jamestown Landing, but in green instead of blue.  It has quite a few pieces but once it is cut out I think I will work on it between other projects.    Kurt spent yesterday detailing his new car.  After that he was volunteered to drive the kids on all of their weekend errands so that they could all have

Sorry for the bad pun, it is the inevitable side effect of living with a geeky engineer and even geekier 10 year old boy.  I spent the morning making a HUGE mess and playing with orange crumbs.  I'm just about out now, so I'll either have to pull out a new color or switch to another project.  Decisions are so complicated.  I am enjoying the crumb along at Jo's Country Junction, but other projects

 I was sure at several points in time that this quilt would get the best of me.  I powered through though, slow and steady until the last stitch was sewn.  I didn't even skip the intricate pieced border, though I was sorely tempted.  The plan was to put away the sewing at 4 and start grading free response essays from Fridays test, but I was too close to the end to give up.  As far as quilting,
