Most of yesterday was a big nap and some cold medicine, but I did finish up this red crumb place-mat in the evening. It is made from 6 crumb blocks that were squared up to 6.5 inches. I usually add sashing strips to crumb blocks because the seams can get bulky along the edges. I was regretting that decision as I tried to get everything to lie flat, but it ended up working out, even if some of the junctions are a bit bulky,
I quilted the middle with a small meander, not quite a stipple. Then in the border, I experimented with some pebbles. I've seen them on other quilts, but never tried them myself. They were time consuming and make the quilt as stiff as a board, but for this small project that doesn't matter. I wouldn't want to try them on a bed quilt though.
The back was a leftover fat quarter. It wasn't quite long enough, so I inserted this strip which matched the border from the front.
Cute placemat! You did a great job with your pebbles!
ReplyDeletePlacemats are fun to do aren't they, I always enjoy using them to experiment with quilting. I agree with you about pebbles though. I do hope you feel better soon and that your cold doesn't hang on for too long.
ReplyDeleteThat's turned out really well. You'll have to make more now so you all can have one each
ReplyDeleteWhat a great place-mat! It is fun to experiment with different quilting on small projects. Pebbling is fun but time consuming and you're right, it does make the piece a little stiff.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I also really like the idea of pebbling on the placemat - we will see if I have enough courage to try it out.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun project and perfect for experimenting with quilting!
ReplyDeleteOoh, cute placemat. It turned out really well, the pebbles are nice but I'm tried them too and found them stiff too. I guess it depends how or where you use them. It's fun to experiment and these are just the right size to try out different stitches.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to use those bits and pieces!
ReplyDeleteI like it! I can see you are going to have a rainbow collection of placemats, a set of 12 by Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that the close decorative stitching makes quilts pretty, but stiff.
Very Nice!
ReplyDeleteThe placemat looks really good - very red. LOL. The pebble quilting was a great design addition, too.
ReplyDeletegreat work... I agree about the pebbles. I'm doing some on a border on my son's quilt - but the border is under an inch wide.....
ReplyDeleteLovely!!
ReplyDeleteI tried commenting on a couple of blogs and wasn't able to because the word verification would not come up on their blog. It's so fun to be able to see what others are doing. Just wish I could comment on all of them.
