Rainbow Sampler - Tic-Tac-Toe

I saw this block over at Indigo Threads on Saturday and could not stop myself from whipping one up.  She got the idea form Block Lotto by Sophie.  There is a great tutorial there with nice pictures and descriptions, but it is for an eight inch block instead of a 6 inch block, so I'll just give you a few basics in case you want to make on in the smaller size.  Be sure to check out the original if anything is unclear.
I happened to find a 6 inch block of bright blue while cleaning up the blue bin this afternoon.   I also found 2- 2.5 inch strips of light blue that were about 7 inches long.  Cut the light blue strips in half to make 4- 1.25 inch strips.
With the large blue square, make two vertical cuts at random angles.  Try to avoid making them parallel to add to the wonky effect.
Sew the light blue strips between each section.  Maybe I could have done a better job at trying to get the edges to line back up, but it all gets squared up in the end, so don't worry about perfection.
Repeat the process with two horizontal cuts.  Try to do a better job about getting the original vertical seams to line back up than I did.
Square up the finished block to 6.5 inches unfinished and you are done!
What a fun kids quilt this would make.

  1. Great block. I hope to make mine on Thursday or Saturday and get all caught up with the sampler.
Went looking for the link up from Saturday and it has gone missing? I was working my way through yesterday afternoon and hoped to continue today.

  4. Fun block! I've never done wonky, I'm not sure I can, but it will be fun to try.

  5. I have just struggled through my first 5 paper pieced vintage quilt blocks and I need a break. This is perfect. Let’s see what I will come up with today. Thanks for the idea and the info on the cutting. I need something just like this of this cold day in VA. Thanks for your visit to my blog. genie
