The butterfly block is made of the same pieces as the bowtie block, but with slightly different color placement. This small version uses 3.5 inch subunits.
I used four different teals and one light solid for the background. From each of the four prints you will need 3 strips that are 1.5 by 3.5 inches. In addition you will need 4 1.5 inch squares of background fabric for each butterfly (16 total squares).
On the back of each 1.5 inch square, draw a pencil line from corner to corner.
Take two of each rectangle and place a small square on each corner so that the diagonal lines are not parallel to one another.
Using the drawn line as a guide, carefully stitch one needles width to the outside of the line. This will make it easier to make sure the flipped corners will cover the base piece.
You will need two wings for each butterfly.
Flip and press the background squares, checking to make sure the edges line up before trimming off the base triangles.
Sew one wing to each side of the remaining rectangles of teal fabric. Press toward the middle of the block and arrange the four subunits so that the butterflies alternate as shown.
Sew the four subunits together and check to make sure your finished block measures 6.5 inches.
