I'm ready to quilt the border on my little blue dear Jane. The border is dark blue. I wasn't sure what kind of marking pen would work. So I did what any reasonable person would do and bought them all. Well, maybe not all, but at least several to try. Any advice on marking dark fabrics for hand quilting? I used the blue Mark-B-Gone in the center, but obviously that won't work on blue fabric. I thought a white pencil would do the trick, but it doesn't seem to show up. I'm going to try a little test to figure things out. With still one more day left in the holiday weekend I have plenty of time to play.
A pounce block would work but only if you have a template of the quilting pattern... :(
ReplyDeleteI like the way you think! You might try a silver marking pencil (or yellow) if you have one.
ReplyDeleteBe sure what ever you use will come out. I just used a chalk pencil on a quilt and the only way it came out was to wash it with soap. I was getting a little nervous before I washed it.
ReplyDeleteI go to the opposite of the colour wheel. So for dark blue, the most "opposite" colour is orange. Depending on the pencil "lead", or "ink", I find that it shows better than most colour including white. Yellow would be a good choice too. Have fun with the experimentation. With all the pencils you've got, I'm sure you will find something that works.
ReplyDeleteWhen all else fails I use crayola washable markers. I like cheap mechanical pencils also. The hera marker is great for straight lines. Good luck hope you find a marker that works for you.
ReplyDeleteI used soap or chalk to mark on dark. I have a drawer full of different markers I've tried on my first hand-quilted quilt and those two things worked best for me with a stencil.

ReplyDeleteI found the only marking pencils that worked were the fons and porter set of 4. white, grey, blue and yellow. The yellow works great on blue. Kids chalk works too or soap slivers... depending on your pattern to mark. Good luck.

I use a white pen from Clover. It comes out with heat, so I put the iron on it after and it just disappears!
ReplyDeleteI use Frixion pens these days. They are erasable with an iron and come in several colours including pink. I also like to use the Clover pencil which comes with three colours of refillable leads - white, pink & green. I like them because they always have sharp points, so the line you draw is a fine line, and they are chalky, so the design comes off easily.

ReplyDeleteI have just purchased a Bohin mechanical fine chalk pencil. I read about on a blog. I am sorry I don't remember which one. I have only used it to mark squares for diagonal seams, but like it so far,
ReplyDeleteI love the FRIXION pens too. But don't use on a solid fabric as they leave a faint line but your quilting stitches might be enough to cover it.
