The Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) started many years ago with a simple idea. As quilters we all generate scraps from every project. Though using them is so much fun, the sheer volume can feel overwhelming. Rather than tackling the entire pile, bag or bin at time, why not do it in manageable chunks? By sorting your scraps into colors and tackling one color each month, using scraps becomes on ongoing project that will add color and variety to your quilts. There are lots of ways to play along with RSC. The simplest is to choose a block that works well with scraps and make some each month with the color of the month. Start with something simple like a nine patch or a string block. Pick a favorite pattern that would look great in all of the colors of the rainbow. When I announce a new color each month, just dig out some scraps in that color and make your blocks. You can do the math ahead of time to know how many you will need, or just collect blocks as the year progresses. Instead of a rainbow quilt, you could make small scrap friendly projects like placemats, scrap bins or even tiny baby quilts. There are no wrong ways to play along, as long as you are working to use up scraps and trying to focus on one color each month.
January this year will be blue! Blue is always an overwhelming color for me. If it feels that way for you, feel free to subdivide. There will be a month later this year for "baby" shades. For now you can focus on the darker or brighter shades if your blue bin is too full.
I think that my first block this year will be a sawtooth star made with 2.5 inch squares. I might substitute strings or crumbs for the centers. I will start with using up HST blocks for the star points though and see where my scraps take me from there. I never quite put away all the extras from my Carpenter star blocks, so I have plenty of scraps to get me started!
Where will your scraps take you this year? Check back in on the Saturday Linky Parties so that we can all cheer you on.

Thank you Angela, let's go for the 2023 RSC!!
I have a mountain of blues, and this is a great one for me to start the year. Choosing a block is always a dilemma for me. I love so many. Maybe the wedding ring blues would be a good one for a beginning
Happily joining you again - this year will be I Spy blocks based on the colour - I imagine some months may be challenging...but I will give it a go!
Thanks Angela
I am new to this and I am really enjoying trying new blocks with the color of the month. Is there a color for May? I wasn't sure if I was looking in the right site. Thanks, Jan
