ScrapHappy Saturday - Hatching new plans

December is for finishing and January is for starting. I am feeling motivated to finish some projects to make room for something new next year. So first with the finishing. This is my Hen & Chick Sampler which needs a good pressing and some borders. I've started sewing 2 inch squares together for that. I think that a 2 inch calming strip surrounded by 2 inch squares and then something to hold it all together. After that, my leaders and enders project for the  last couple of years was plus blocks. I am sure that I have enough of those for a nice large sized quilt. The hexies are so close that I can taste it. Sadly, the second half of this year just got hectic and sewing time has taken a big hit. This too shall pass. There is a cycle to all things. I am sure there is another saying I could use, but you get the idea....
That leads us to ideas for next year. I screenshotted this off of Instagram as an inspiration photo. I am not thinking of exactly this, but something similar. If I take 2.5 inch blocks and tic-tac toe them like this, then I could alternate them with larger squares framed out in a similar way. I think that I will play with that idea. I am thinking that what is here must be on a larger scale. The sashing strips on the split blocks need to be twice as wide as the ones on the combined block, right? Maybe I need to doodle some things to make a plan. If I use a solid block then all the sashing strips could be the same which would make it easier to do these as my new leaders and enders project. I will keep you posted on this if it works.

Looking at it, I'd say that the white strips are all the same width. If the 4-patch block is 6" finished and the white strips finish at 2" wide for a 10" finished block, the separated squares are 4" finished. Love 10" blocks, for the easy math! It is very tempting :-)

Thanks for the inspiration! I have a bin full of 2.5 squares that need to find a home.

Your Hens and Chicks sampler is fabulous! The border idea you have for it sounds perfect, too. It is definitely fun to be thinking ahead to next year's plans while attempting to finish what we've been working on this year - the block idea you're showing there is a neat one!

You get a lot more sewing done than you think, especially when you work full time and have a family. Your inspiration photo for next year is really interesting and immediately stirred up some ideas in my head too. I think the sashing on both blocks would be the same width, so maybe the actual colored squares are slightly different sized.

I think the blocks require 2.5" squares and 1.5" sashings. The final block size would be 6.5" (6" finished). Looks like a great L&E quilt!

That is a neat pattern! It will be fun to see what you come up with for a pattern.

What a wonderful sampler! The borders sound great. I also love your inspiration photo. I'm sure your take on it will be even better!

Your Hen and Chick sampler looks terrific! I have enjoyed watching your progress this year! I also like your idea for next year. I like the effect of the 1 1/2 inch strips. What if you used a 3 1/2 inch square for the alternate block? That square might give your project a more modern feel.

Sounds like you just got handed a big project for next year. Hopefully you can sneak in some good stitching time over the school break to tide you over for a few months.

Your Hen & Chicks blocks look great together! I need to pull mine out and figure out how to set them.
I like your inspiration quilt. I've seen that pattern before; it is Scrappy Lattice by Bonjour Quilts. I believe the sashing width stays the same throughout, but the colored squares are different sizes in the two different blocks.

I was wondering how all those Hen 'n Chicks blocks would come together. Very creative. I enjoyed following your riff on going from inspiration to a variety of possibilities for 2025. Sometimes I think the planning stage is half the fun.
