Sunday Feels like Saturday

I am moving everything downstairs and figuring out where it goes in the new sewing room.  Lizzie is keeping me company of course.   I thought about making bigger scrap bins to fit into the cube shelf, but now that I put the scrap bins in, I think it might be nice to store yardage next to bins.  The green is a little bit out of hand, as is the pink.   At some point I still need to make bins for black and brown and lights.
Everything is still a bit of a mess.   I have an Ikea storage rack that used to live in Sydney's closet.   It is empty now, but It does a nice job of holding the Go! Cutter.   All of the unfinished flimsies are hanging on the storage rack.  I will load one up as soon as I get things cleared up a bit.  Sydney ditched the closet door at some point.  I will have to add that to the project list.  There is a nice outlet right in the middle of the wall, but it doesn't seem to work.  The list continues!
I peeked out onto the balcony just long enough to see the sun come up, but is a chilly again today.   There were some surfers out enjoying the waves.  I think they must be a little bit crazy!
Speaking of crazy, I have made 18 of the tiny blocks.  3 inches is just such an adorable size!  I cut a nice stack of plus blocks form 2 inch strips to use as leaders and enders. The blue crumb blocks are 4.5 inches.  They will be the centers for stars.  Still need to cut some 2.5 inch HST units, that can be my project for the afternoon.   First though, I think I will head over to Oh Scrap! And see what other scrappy fun people are up to today.  I have three new rainbow projects for 23.  You just never know when inspiration will strike for just one more to add to the list.

ScrapHappy Saturday - Sew Begins Break

Today is the first official day of winter break!  I'm going to keep quilting some more on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler from 2014.
Then, if I feel like sitting for a bit, I've got three quilt tops pinned or bagged and ready to sew. End of the year organizing of fabric will round out the list for a full day of quality quilting time.
I hope you are finding a little time among all the holiday festivities to think about ending and begining anew.  The linky is available below for all who wish to join and share news of their rainbow scrappiness.

ScrapHappy Saturday - The Begining of the End

There is no new official color for December.  You are welcome to make one up if you need 12 colors for your quilt.  Might I suggest aqua, which sadly did not get a turn this year?  Or the dark and light neutrals?  How about peach, violet or sage?  I you do not need a 12th color though, now is the time to start finishing things up.  Go back for any colors you might have missed along the way.  Take stock of your block pile and figure out if you have enough to put a quilt together.  If not, can you make up the difference, or do some projects need to carry over to the new year?  For me, December will be all about quilting.  Cherry Blossoms is draped over the frame.
The dining room table is three deep.  Sawtooth Stars got teardrops appliquéd down over Thanksgiving.  Well, except for that one silly brown piece that fell off on the trip.  Underneath is Hawaii Sunset which has a back already made and another sampler quilt which does not.  That should all keep me busy for a while.
How are your blocks in progress looking with just three ScrapHappy Saturdays left in the year?
Misterlinky is below, please share your progress with us all.  Don't forget to visit others and encourage them as they begin to finish what they started.

Too Many Stars

Sydney's LAX team won the first game of her tournament this morning, but they lost the second.  Since it was a single elimination tournament, we were home right after lunch.  My goal for the afternoon was to finish off the lime green postage stamp stars that I worked on yesterday.  I pulled everything out and realized that orange was missing from the collection.  Now I just need to decide how many of what type of quilt these will become.  I like the 8 by 10 setting with 2 inch lattice and cornerstones, but I'm afraid it will be too big.  Maybe two twin sized quilts would be better?  I think I'd better do some math and make some decisions.

ScrapHappy Saturday - Indigo

Welcome to a new month at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!
This is your chance to try to work in some of your darker shades.  Dark blue, dark purplish blue.  If you don't have those, how about black or grey?  Hopefully one of those shades will work for most of our rainbow scrappers.

Postage Stamp Stars

I seem to have an abundance of postage stamp blocks.  They are "cheater" squares, chain pieced rather that sewn individually with each square unique.  Feel free to cut individual 1.5 inch squares if you prefer, but I used strips and the tutorial posted here.  Just make strip sets of 4 1.5 inch scraps and sub cut into 1.5 inches.  When sewn together, these little squares should be 4.5 inches and will form the center of your star.
Other than the center square, everything else can be cut from 2.5 inch squares of colored and background fabric using the easy angle and companion angle rulers.  If you don't like the rulers, then use your favorite flying goose method.  As long as you unfinished block measures 2.5 by 4.5 you will be good to go.
I will go through the ruler method though, because it is my favorite.  The "sky" in this case is the same color as your center square.  Use the easy angle ruler with 2.5 inch strips placed right sides together.  You will need four pairs of triangles.
From the background fabric you will cut four 2.5 inch squares.
In addition you will also use the companion angle ruler to cut the "goose" portion of the block.  You will need four geese.  I like to stack my fabric 4 high and get them all from the same cut, but you can also cut them out one by one.
Start by sewing a one side of the sky to the goose.  Press with the seam going away from the goose.
Next sew the left side of the sky to the goose.  Press
Repeat for all four geese.  Remove the dog ears.
All you subunits are now ready to go.  Lay them out as a nine patch.  Make sure that the geese form the background and the sky is adjacent to the center block.
Sew one background square to each end of the side geese.  Sew the other two geese to the top and the bottom of the center square.  Press the center section seams toward the center of the block and the side portions away from the center so that the seams will nestle.
Finally, sew the sides onto the center and you are ready to go.
You could also use a string block, a crumb block, or even a novelty fabric as the 4.5 inch center square.  There are so many possibilities to try.
